Tricks to Keep your home Cool in Summer

When the summer is on the way, its time to start thinking about how you can keep your home cool. As temperatures rise, most of us resort to keeping our homes cool by using air conditioners.

    Grow plants on the terrace

Many houses have rooms located under the terrace or balcony. These get heated during the day due to the roof being exposed to direct sunlight. An idea for keeping the room cool without depending upon air-conditioning is to install reflective tiles on the floor of the terrace or balcony. This will prevent the tiles from absorbing the heat and keep the room below the terrace a few degrees cooler. Cultivating plants on the terrace helps cool down a building naturally.

The mud used to grow plants acts as an insulator, absorbing the direct heat from sun, thereby keeping the slab cool.Using plastic gardening sheets will also help in preventing any kind of water leakage.

    Plants on windows

Green plants on your window ledge also help humidify and cool the hot air flowing in and around your house.

While you are leaving windows open, also place some plants on the ledge. Window planters are easy to install and help humidify the dry air circulating inside. Window plants are make your windows look attractive.

    White lime wash on terrace

Applying a layer of white lime wash on the terrace, to act as a reflective surface. This washes away in the rains, so a re-application is required every summer.

    Facilitate cross-ventilation:

One of the best ways to keep the house cool in summer naturally is to cross-ventilate, so that the hot air can get flushed out of the rooms and bring in the cooler air. It’s advisable to use windows to cross-ventilate in the early mornings and evenings, when the outdoor air is cooler and doesnot come in to add to the sweltering heat inside your house.

When you are building your house, design rooms with windows on adjacent or opposite walls so that you can cross-ventilate the rooms in summer.

    Use cool lighting:

If you are still using incandescent bulbs in your home, its time to replace them with LED or fluorescent bulbs that do not generate heat. Switch off the lights when they are not in use, as they can increase the temperature inside the room.

    Let the air in:

Direct sunlight can increase the indoor temperature of the house.Keep as many windows/ ventilators open as possible during early mornings and late evenings around 5am-8am and 7pm-10 pm. During this time of the day the air gets replenished without all the harsh heat from the sun.

    Incorporate cool colors

The dry summer weather conditions make it a good time to paint your walls. Give your home a seasonal upgrade that will look fresh throughout the year. Light colors like pastel yellow, aqua, millennial pink, beige and white work well. The paint your house will also give you an opportunity to evaluate your walls and prepare them for the monsoon season.
